Loreena McKennitt is well known as a composer and singer. In a recording career spanning more than two decades, Ms. McKennitt’s ‘eclectic Celtic’ music has received critical acclaim world-wide, and gold, platinum and multi-platinum sales awards in 15 countries across four continents. To date, she has sold over 14 million albums with a catalogue that includes seven studio recordings, three seasonal recordings, a live in-concert DVD and two DVD documentaries. She’s won two Junos, Canada’s premiere music award, garnered two GRAMMY® nominations and has performed for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
Less well known is the fact that Ms. McKennitt is a highly successful businesswoman who has created an independent record label with celebrated international success.
Born in Morden, Manitoba, Canada, she moved to Stratford, Ontario in 1981, where she initially worked with Canada’s renowned Stratford Festival. In 1985 she established her own record label, Quinlan Road, a move which has made her a rarity in the music industry.
In the early years, Ms. McKennitt ran the operation from her kitchen table, selling her recordings by mail order and producing her own concert tours. Today, she leads her own company with responsibilities that include everything from creating strategic business plans to overseeing marketing and promotion.
Ms. McKennitt’s business acumen is also applied to the three charitable foundations she established. Her Three Oaks Foundation provides financial support to cultural, environmental, historical and social groups. The Cook-Rees Memorial Fund for Water Search and Safety, founded in 1998, has raised more than $4 million in support of water safety education, as well as search, rescue and recovery operations. In 2000, Ms. McKennitt purchased a recently-closed public school in Stratford and transformed it into the Falstaff Family Centre. Responding to concerns identified by the local community, the Centre focuses on the needs of families and children in Perth County, Ontario, which is where she resides.
Ms. McKennitt’s passion for business is matched by her passion for human rights. In 2006 and 2007 she was involved in a landmark human rights privacy case in Britain, where the courts ruled in her favour. The judgment, which was upheld by the House of Lords, has helped to advance privacy law around the world.
Ms. McKennitt is a member of the Order of Canada and the Order of Manitoba. In 2002 and 2012 she was the recipient of Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden and Diamond Jubilee medals and in 2013 she was appointed to the rank of Knight of the National Order of Arts and Letters by the Republic of France.
From 2006 to 2013 Ms. McKennitt held the position of Honorary Colonel of the 435 Transport and Rescue Squadron in the Royal Canadian Air Force and upon completion of the appointment was awarded the RCAF Commander’s Commendation in recognition of outstanding professionalism and dedication. In September 2014, Ms. McKennitt was appointed as the Honorary Colonel of the Royal Canadian Air Force.
She also holds honourary degrees from the University of Manitoba (Winnipeg), Sir Wilfrid Laurier University (Waterloo), Queen’s University (Kingston) and George Brown College (Toronto).

GREG LASWELL’S EVERYONE THINKS I DODGED A BULLET…CONSIDERED.
Okay, so what? Here’s another album about heartbreak…or heartache.
But isn’t the worry that when each of us stares down heartbreak/ache (we all do) – we just want so desperately to know that as many as possible are just as miserable as we are? Misery doesn’t just need company – it needs a very specific sort of kinship. And it needs someone who can profoundly articulate it – not just rhyme a few words about some inconsiderate asshole.
It’s not important to reveal the specific catalyst for Greg Laswell’s latest record, Everyone Thinks I Dodged a Bullet – but rather to focus anew on what makes him one of the most uncompromising songwriters of these modern times. You may recognize a bit of Leonard Cohen in his tormented baritone. You might think of Tom Waits when you sense how deep down in the gut these songs come from.
But if there is a quality that still and ever marks out Laswell’s writing, it is an ability to use words like unrepentant paper cuts. Should you be at the receiving end, perhaps you might not at first feel the sting; but it will burn like hell later.
Imagine the coldness of being the subject of such biting vitriol as, “I’m gonna be lazy when I write about you.” Imagine that you mean so much nothing to someone you once meant the world to.
And how would you process the sting of, “What are you going to do when gravity gets to you?” Meanness, after all, is sometimes utterly justified – and in Greg Laswell’s world, no punches are pulled for the sake of possible hurt feelings.
But if you feel the same as does he, the words feel like little (or maybe enormous) triumphs. His pen is mighty – especially when it’s aimed at the heart. And the songs urge you to join in pushing the point in deeper.
The music lends powerful atmospheric gravitas to the words. It soars with tortured majesty (“Lifetime Ago”), it haunts so ever beautifully (“Out of Line”), and it aches with a piercing sadness (“Play That One Again”).
Popmatters called his work, “Haunting, genuine and surprisingly uplifting.” Filter described his songs as “Punches to the gut.” And Blurt said of his music that it’s both “majestic and meditative.”
On the title track Laswell matter-of-factly confesses, “Everyone thinks I dodged a bullet / But I think I shot the gun.” Loaded words, for an album loaded with open wounds.
The Sock It To Em Sock Campaign was launched in 2011 by Sue Lee, CEO of EQ Media and creator of “I Believe in Me!” When the entrepreneur recognized how many Americans face the harsh winter cold and dampness with inadequate protection for their feet, she asked her friend Phillis Shimamoto to join her in 2012 to form their non-profit and began soliciting fellow small business owners, churches, schools, city governments and the local media to pitch in.
The organization aims to cover the feet of those in need continually all year round. Our motto is, “We’re taking socks to the streets!” Anyone in any location can participate by donating socks, becoming a Sock Ambassador or simply sharing information about the Sock It To Em Sock Campaign on social media or through other avenues.
By the end of December 2012, 10,000 pair of socks were collected in the Denver Metro area and statewide as well as small pockets across the USA. In 2015, the collection grew to 40,000 nationwide, and in 2016, the amount more than tripled to over 147,000 in 39 states. Since inception, the amount collected is over 225,000 pair of socks!
