We are proud to join the Creative Music Works to present a concert with the ground breaking improvisations of The Boulder Creative Music Ensemble, and the sonic creations of Farrell Lowe and J.A.Deane. This is out final concert of year packed with incredible artists, and we are ending with a BANG!
BCME is a group of hugely talented musicians whose past concerts helped us to feel that we had made the right choice in deciding to live in Boulder. Ever since, we have been enriched by all of them in various groups and as soloists. We will always be grateful for so much wonderful music, making Boulder all the more great to live in. Now we will be able to hear them once again.
Their founder, Fred Hess, recently passed away and we are all heart-broken. We dedicate this concert to him. Thanks for all the joy and beautiful challenges, Fred! - Dan and Diane

The Reunion of the Boulder Creative Music Ensemble (BCME)

"With thoughts of our founder, Fred Hess, who passed recently, on our minds, the BCME is announcing this reunion concert in his memory. BCME is not the British Congress of Mathematics Education, or bis(chloromethl) ether. It is however the Boulder Creative Music Ensemble. Formed in 1982, by Fred Hess, these boundary stretching improvisers have now had 35 + years of wide ranging music making to shape their unique musical personalities. Our history includes performances at the Rainbow Music Hall, performing with a flower arranger, a calligrapher, dancers, mimes, and performances with Jay Clayton, Paul McCandless, Hugh Ragin, Bruce Odland and many others."
Using graphic scores, and more conventional music, or just open improvising, BCME creates group and solo improvisations of depth and richness. After disbanding in the mid-nineties, the players continued their individual musical paths in performance, teaching and education through a huge variety of musical styles, and return now to play with highly enriched creative palettes. Their thoughtful interaction can be playful, moving, powerful, or humorous, sometimes at the same time. Their music shows an influence of The Art Ensemble of Chicago, Anthony Braxton, and perhaps Steve Lacy, and but the personalities of the musicians are distinct, clear, and now, well formed. They will be playing selections they debuted in the day, now refreshed, and new surprises.
WE HOPE YOU CAN JOIN US FOR THIS VERY SPECIAL, ONE-OF-A-KIND CONCERT! - Dan and Diane

Ron Miles

Denver trumpeter Ron Miles' resume includes time with Circuit Rider (a very successful trio Bill Frisell and Brian Blade that we produced last year)Bill Frisell, Don Byron, the Ellington Orchestra, and Fred Hess’ Boulder Creative Music Ensemble. Besides being solicited all over the world for his unique sound, Ron is a staple of the Denver jazz scene and his recent releases as band leader show off his skills as a composer and arranger as well as a “phenomenally gifted trumpeter” (Bill Milkowski).
Mark Harris "I have a Masters in Sax performance from CU Boulder- I currently teach at Metro State College of Denver, University of Colorado at Denver, and at the University of Denver. I have had a fair bit of experience playing, from doing solo classical recitals to playing with many many bands- including Thinking Plague, Hamster Theatre, momen terra, random Axe, the boulder Creative Music Ensemble, Monkey Siren, Lois LaFond and the Rockadiles, recording with all those, and Fred Hess, and Ron Miles, and various one off recordings etc- I have been fortunate to have had some excellent students who now are doing quite amazing things in the music world."
