All you have to do is take a quick look around Boulder to know that there’s something special about the city. You’ll see magic in the beautiful backdrop of the Flatirons against the sparkling Boulder Creek and the nearby bike path filled with runners, cyclists and people out enjoying the delights of the Boulder Valley. This special place has fostered the development of top athletes and inspired the residents of this city to be active and healthy.

Sunset Magazine says that Boulder’s atmosphere of altitude and sun make the city a true Mecca for endurance athletes. Hikers and cyclists get a special mention by "Sunset."

Some top recreation spots noted by the national magazine are Valmont Bike Park, hiking at Chautauqua and Mount Sanitas and cross-country skiing in North Boulder Park.

The top fittest cities in the Western United States, according to Sunset, are San Diego and Long Beach - which are both in California. The only other Colorado city on the list was Colorado Spring, which ranked eighth in the United States.

Other fit places on the list were Boise, Idaho; Bend, Oregon; Flagstaff, Arizona; Seattle and San Francisco.
